Hail storms are an inevitable part of spring driving in Colorado. Here’s what to do if a storm strikes while you’re driving.

driving in a hailstorm

If you look for it, you’ll realize how many vehicles in Colorado have visible hail damage. Colorado hail storms can vary in severity, but even light hail can still cause dangerous road conditions. Here’s what to do if you get caught in a hail storm while on the road:

Stay inside your vehicle. If you’re familiar with the term “baseball-sized hail” then you know that serious hail is no joke. It can fall at fast speeds and cause injury to anything in its path.

Pull your vehicle over. Stop driving and pull your vehicle to a safe place so the hail doesn’t break the windshield or any window. Driving will just compound hail’s impact with your car and cause more damage. If possible, stop under an overpass and pull out of traffic lanes and onto a shoulder. Avoid ditches due to the possibility of high-rising water or flash floods.

Keep your car angled so hail is hitting the front. Front windshields are built with reinforcements designed to withstand pelting objects. However, side windows and rear windshield glass are not always designed the same, so they’re much more susceptible to breakage.

Lie down and keep your back to the windows. If you keep a blanket in your car, use it to cover yourself and prevent possible debris from hitting you.

Avoid driving through dangerous areas after the storm passes. Severe hail is usually accompanied by heavy rains. The average automobile can be swept off the road in 12 inches of moving water. Attempting to drive through water also may stall your engine. If you come upon a flooded street, take an alternate route. Stay updated on road conditions on the Colorado Department of Transportation website for the best information.
